A recent article published in the Asia Times by former oil market regulator Chris Cook and posted below argues that all oil prices take their clues from the Brent spot price, a price that could be easily manipulated.  Cook therefore believes the prices of all traded oil contracts, including WTI itself could suddenly decline in [...]

An insightful report in the Financial Times posted below ascribes the recent rise in oil prices above $100 to the far greater than expected losses of oil production in the Gulf from hurricane damage.  As the report also mentions, oil prices have risen despite softness in the global economy.  There are many factors influencing the [...]

I own shares of PetroBank (PBEGF) for two reasons.  First the company has been doing a credible job of buying and exploiting conventional oil and gas resources.  In Q2 it reported diluted EPS of $1.92 ($C) vs. $0.26 based on 23.9k boe production vs. 6.9k in Canada and Colombia.  Just based on those results, the [...]

A Financial Post article, below, reports that tightening credit conditions will force some Canadian companies to defer expansion plans, particularly in the oil sands.  There has been an expectation that the oil sands will add some 2 mb/d of capacity by 2015.   It appears such growth will be scaled back.  If oil prices go lower [...]

Massachusetts has joined California in approaching the federal government for emergency funds to deal with cash flow problems.  In the case of MA, the state indicated a possible need for $7B in emergency loans.  Massachusetts faces a $233M shortfall in revenue for its first fiscal quarter due to a slower economy according to a brief [...]

The Export Land Model got another piece of strong evidence recently from a report by Bloomberg that Russian oil production dropped .4% in September (boy, that’s quick - seems likely to be revised) but exports dropped 10%!  If true, it almost sounds as though Russia is building some above ground strategic storage capacity.   On the [...]
